Louis Eugène Dupont (1839-1901) studied engineering at the Zurich Institute of Technology. After his studies, he worked in Geneva as a tramway construction engineer. He built the first tramway between Geneva and Chêne-Bourg. In 1866, he was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Geneva. In 1873, he travelled to Russia, where he built several tram lines in Riga and St. Petersburg. In 1875, he became Consul General of Switzerland and Mission Leader in St. Petersburg. In 1900, he returned to Geneva where he died the following year.
