Handwritten letter issued by the Department of War in Washington dated May 28, 1828, to Major General Alexander Macomb informing him of his assumption of duties as Commander-in-chief of the United States Army. The letter was probably signed by the President of the United States John Q. Adams but the signature is missing where the paper has been cut.
