Spoerri exhibited his trap paintings for the first time in Paris in 1960. Created in the 12 m2 room he occupied in the Hôtel Carcassonne between 1959 and 1965, he presented the remains of meals and used dishes frozen as they were on their support. At that time, the artist did not rearrange anything. He preserves a given situation in its instantaneous, banal and fortuitous nature.
He is interested in the immobilisation of objects that are usually handled and moved during a dinner party. After making them static, he straightens the whole against the wall: the tilting of the horizontal plane of the table - Spoerri's only demonstrative gesture - removes the scene from the ephemerality of everyday life. From then on, the viewer is invited to observe from the front and from a distance what, while sitting at the table, he would not have paid any attention to. Food and its consumption are themes dear to Spoerri, who sees them as an expression of the cycle of life.* The tableaux-pièges have been considered to be on the borderline between art and ethnography.
This 1987 work is an evolution of these trap paintings. This time, the setting is completely fictitious and invites derision with this work, which was created with a satirical aim.
