Hadrosaurus sp. dinosaur claw, USA (South Dakota, Hell Creek Formation), Cretaceous (66 million years old), on custom-made base, h. 8 cm.
Hadrosauridae or "duck-billed dinosaurs" were large herbivorous dinosaurs that populated the North American plains at the end of the dinosaur age. Hadrosaurus could stand up on its hind legs, had no crest on its skull, but a large hump on its snout. It was on average 9 metres long and weighed about 3 tonnes. Many of the deep fossil traces found by palaeontologists contain impressions of hadrosaur skin and nails: This example of a claw corresponds exactly to the specimens found in the field.
