Group portraits, set of 3 albumen prints, India, 19th century: 1 showing the Maharaja of Benares accompanied by six other men, with a hookah and cane, 26x22 cm (print, on view). A similar print, attributed to Bourne & Shepherd, dated 1875-76, is in the Royal Collection, inv. no. RCIN 2701723 1 group portrait with probably Maharajas, some with swords, 21x26 cm (print, on view). A similar print, in an album on the north-eastern frontiers, by Samuel Bourne, Charles Shepherd and other photographers, dated 1860-90, was offered for sale at Sotheby's, London, 24 May 2022, lot no. 102 1 portrait showing Afridi (Pashtun tribe) at Fort Jamrud, signed Shepherd 1387, 22.5x29 cm (print). A similar print can be found in an album of photographs entitled Afghanistan, 1879-80, held at the Library of Congress, Washington, inv. no. 2013646213. The print is dated 1866.

Cet ensemble de plus de 90 représentations photographiques ou peintes de l'Inde au temps du Raj britannique est le troisième et dernier volet de cette vaste collection déjà proposée lors des ventes de septembre et décembre 2022. Éclectique, elle nous offre un aperçu des diverses techniques photographiques employées à cette époque. Certaines photographies sont par ailleurs attribuées notamment au studio Bourne & Shepherd ou à Lala Deen Dayal, photographes renommés de l'époque.
