Elephants, a set of 5 prints, 3 on albumen paper, 1 platinum-palladium and 1 silver print, India, late 19th century - 20th century, comprising: 
1 print on albumen paper showing an elephant with an empty howdah, inside a city, 14.5x17 cm (print, on view)
1 albumen print showing an elephant richly adorned, carrying three men (probably including Maharaja Fateh Singh Ji of Mewar), surrounded by a crowd, attributed to Lala Deen Dayal, numbered 1100, 19.5x27.5 cm (print, on view)(restorations). A similar print, attributed to Lala Deen Dayal, dated ca 1890, is in the British Library, London, inv. no. 430461
1 print on albumen paper showing the Viceroi elephant, with a howdah, extended, 13.5x17.5 cm (print). The print is glued to a cardboard box with the inscription "H. E. The Viceroy's Elephant". A similar print, attributed to Bourne & Shepherd, was offered for sale at Bonhams, London, 13 April 2010, lot no. 144
1 platinum-palladium print showing a richly adorned and painted elephant carrying two men and surrounded by three men on the ground, attributed to Bourne & Shepherd, stamped "Bourne & Shepherd, photographers, Calcutta", on the back of the print, 26.5x23.5 cm. A similar print, attributed to Bourne & Shepherd, dated 1903, is in the Royal Collection, inv. no. RCIN 2916580

Cet ensemble de plus de 90 représentations photographiques ou peintes de l'Inde au temps du Raj britannique est le troisième et dernier volet de cette vaste collection déjà proposée lors des ventes de septembre et décembre 2022. Éclectique, elle nous offre un aperçu des diverses techniques photographiques employées à cette époque. Certaines photographies sont par ailleurs attribuées notamment au studio Bourne & Shepherd ou à Lala Deen Dayal, photographes renommés de l'époque.
