In-4° bound in full olive-green morocco, the boards decorated with Art Nouveau mosaic motifs: the upper board with a mosaic floral and animal border, the lower with a mosaic design inspired by a butterfly; double gilt fillet to the edges, gilt and mosaic endpapers, jacquard doublure in black and gold; original wrappers preserved; housed in a chemise and slipcase. Binding signed by H. Noulhac.

Illustrated with 16 wood-engraved plates outside the text, 32 varied text borders (each printed in a different colour for each tale), 15 tail-pieces, and a triptych frontispiece engraved in intaglio and heightened by hand with watercolour, all by Georges de Feure. Edition limited to 220 copies on Japan paper; this copy, specially printed for F. Leseur, contains unique additions, including a rejected proof of the original cover, the two-colour uncaptioned model for the triptych frontispiece, and numerous trial proofs and design maquettes for the text borders and chapter openings. A copy in which all wood-engraved plates have been hand-watercoloured, preserved in a high-quality Art Nouveau binding.

A magnificent copy with uncommon and desirable enhancements for this title.

Excellent condition

Binding:
Spine of the portfolio slightly sun-faded.
A few small areas of wear to the case.
A light, localised sunning affecting two narrow bands at the head and tail of the book’s spine.

Inner leaves:
Occasional and minimal marginal spotting on a few leaves.
Very slight offsetting opposite certain heightened plates.
Colours remain bright, and the trial plates are in notably fine condition.
