A pair of Imari porcelain coolers, China, circa 1730, or France, Samson Ceramics, 19th century, 12 cm high, 13.5 cm diameter approximately (interior) (one with hairlines)
2 similar coolers, described as possibly Chinese for the export, circa 1730, were sold at Christie's, New York, 12 February 2026, lots 205 and 206. The origin of some porcelain items bearing the same decoration, that have been for years attributed to a second service ordered by Louis XV in China in the early 18th century, is nowadays reconsidered. While some experts maintain the theory of a Chinese origin, others argue for a 19th century Samson Ceramics production. X-ray fluorescence analysis that have been recently made on the items of the two groups have revealed a very similar composition of the paste and the blue enamels, without any definitive answer. This uncertainty makes the interest of these armorial porcelains even greater than before.
